This Acura TL Type S driver is keeping it old school. Also, considering the flex that antenna had under MILD acceleration, I firmly believe that this radio whipsaw will take out the side mirror under severe DEcelleration.
I’d pay money to see that, actually.
But seriously, why does anyone have these anymore?!

When you need an Acura convoy, you got to have the right communications gear.

Alabama has an “Amateur Radio” license plate, so you can always identify the uber-nerds.
They usually have this antenna and a few Dr Who and Infowars bumper stickers just to solidify it.

Bacon is pretty tasty but I still don’t now why they need an antenna

This has a “Radio Operator” plate as well. And while there were no Infowars stickers on the bumper, dude looked like he might have a fallout bunker somewhere.

1) no monthly payments make this way cheaper in the long run
2) self-sufficient communication means you’re not relying on a spotty network
3) the range on a 1om frequency makes a cellular connection laughable
4) better for group communication
5) lots of local emergency networks use ham operators and volunteers because the connection is more reliable and longer-reaching than cellular networks
6) also receives weatherband, police/NSF/EMS frequencies
7) nerd factor.

I got a dollar that says his license plate is also his HAM call sign.

Why would you not have a CB and HAM (if licenced) on your vehicle? There is plenty of area without cell service. It is also more fun than a cellphone.

Just admit it: #7 is the real answer.

I didn’t even think about that shit. Probably so.

A CB in a truck (for ranch communications) is fine. Cheap, I can slap an antenna on the roof with magnets no problem... but a HAM radio, with all the licenses, equipment, permanent antenna mounts, ever-decreasing user base, etc... Cool for the house, but for your car?

We use them a fuck ton in the off roading community

It’s really common but a little hard to spot since call signs look a lot like random license plates. Would be something like “N8XKC” or “KH7KQR”

I have to say it, this guy is probably really tedious to talk to. And may have a big model train set in his basement.
